volterragusto

As part of Volterragusto, the event Il Palio dei Caci is a "historic" happening where you will see wheels of delicious cheese produced in the Balze Volterrane rolling, chased by the "runners" from the eight local districts who will compete with wooden paddles, skillfully navigating straw obstacles, to bring their wheel, in the shortest time possible, to the finish line.

Don't match? Visit The Salt di Volterra and the Old Railway.

A grand itinerary of discovery of the landscape, the engineering works, and the history of salt extraction in Volterra.

With an open and panoramic route, the path follows the track of the old rack railway that connected Saline with Volterra from 1912 to 1958 along an 8.5 km line where the ascending locomotives had to follow the train in the rear; the remains of the railway structure such as small service buildings, bridges, and embankments are still visible today.

You will be able to admire the beautiful scenery of the clay hills with views reaching as far as the Metalliferous Hills, where  once you pass around Poggio Scornello, you will find yourself in front of the ancient residence of the Inghirami family of Volterra.
You will then arrive in the area of the "Moie Vecchie", characterised by the exploitation of the "salsa" water springs from which salt was extracted by evaporating brine in special boilers.

Those who wish can combine a poignant experience at the former Psychiatric Hospital, a place that will certainly make you reflect.
