From the Theatre of Silence to the Fortress of Pietracassia
An enchanting excursion through Lajatico's hills to visit Teatro del Silenzio and Rocca di Pietracassia during the summer solstice.
An
excursion through postcard landscapes of Valdera, barren countryside
surrounded by farms, an endless series of hills that fade into the
horizon of Volterra where ochre colours blend with the cobalt blue of
the sky, offering expansive views.
The focal point of this adventure will be the iconic Theatre of Silence, a symbol of the beautiful village of Lajatico and now an integral part of the imagery of the Tuscan landscape.
We will walk through immense horizons to the solitary and mystical
Rocca di Pietracassia, one of the most important early medieval
monuments in the Province of Pisa, nestled on a limestone spur
overlooking the Sterza stream, a bastion between Valdera and
Valdicecina, a solemn and magical place.
We
will then return on our steps to take the path through the gentle hills
until we reach the height from which we can overlook the Theatre of
Silence, which will greet us with its unmistakable bulk, a testament to
the integration of architecture and environment.
An itinerary that is a must for the curriculum of every passionate hiker.
The route to the panoramic Rocca di Pietracassia
is considered optional. Many people visit these places in June to enjoy
an unparalleled view, and then, with the last light of twilight, to
admire the Theatre of Silence in its unique setting facing Volterra in
the magical atmosphere of the Summer Solstice.
The
complete route is approximately 9 kilometres long with an elevation
gain of 230 metres and includes a visit to the village of Lajatico, the
Theatre of Silence, and the Fortress of Pietracassia.
The
Theatre of Silence is a unique place in the world. It is a natural
amphitheatre that has seen international artists of the calibre of:
Laura Pausini, Roberto Bolle, Placido Domingo, Jose Carreras, and Andrea
Bocelli, the main creator of the initiative who returns to his hometown
of Lajatico every year for a concert. After that, the Theatre falls
back into slumber, remaining in silence.
