San Vincenzo: explore the sea and the countryside during the autumn, winter, and spring summer seasons

Excursion from Sassetta to Monte Calvi

Panoramic tour from Rosa Marble to the Tuscan Archipelago.

San Vincenzo - Sassetta km 20

Exciting itinerary to discover some of the most characteristic places in Tuscany between Val di Cornia and the Etruscan Coast.

Sassetta, or Saxum, meaning "small rock" is a picturesque village perched on a rocky hill at 330 m above sea level, dominated by an ancient medieval fortress. Clinging to a steep hill, it hides a strong and proud soul, surrounded by woods and the intense fragrances of the Mediterranean scrub, revealing ancient trades such as that of the stonecutters who have shaped the area's characteristic red marble for countless generations.
You will discover the secrets of this strong land by travelling along a spectacular well-marked route that winds through the woods of Valcanina, leading to the panoramic balcony of Monte Calvi. This is truly a magical spot, a terrace overlooking the Etruscan coast and the islands of the Tuscan Archipelago amid a profusion of blooms.
The tour can only conclude with a walk through the streets of the historic village, also admiring its artistic and cultural heart with the typical red marble sculptures from the Symposium of Contemporary Sculpture

Curiosities

Sassetta, according to common belief, derives from the Latin saxum, meaning "The Little Rock". Nevertheless, this interpretation does not take into account that the ancient name of the village is "Saxeta" and indeed, the inhabitants have always referred to themselves as "sassetani".

Therefore, one might speculate that "lSaxeta" could mean "Stony Place", or by analogy "The Place of Rocks".

The Castle of Sassetta dates back around a thousand years, a period when all of Europe was under the empire of Otto III. It was during those years that he travelled to Italy to receive the imperial crown in Monza and Rome.

Otto III of Saxony left numerous traces of his passage through Tuscany. In particular, it is essential to note that the Saxons, according to the most accepted theory, owe their name to a peculiar weapon: the Sachs, also known as Scramasax, or sachsum, which is a single-edged short sword.
