Aperitif in Campiglia Marittima

Aperitif in Campiglia Marittima is the bare minimum.

Among the things to do and see near San Vincenzo, but why not enjoy a lunch, dinner, or some gastronomic shopping among the narrow streets and squares of the town.

So close to San Vincenzo yet so unknown to many tourists. Are you among those who have never been to the historic village of Campiglia Marittima?

Less than 9 kilometres away, this is another historic village in the inland area of the Etruscan Coast, one of the 50 most charming villages according to the classification of Touring Club Italia. It is one of the most populated, dynamic, and with the largest territory. It stands on a hill from which one can admire the entire plain stretching to Piombino. The centre is located at the top of the hill, surrounded by ancient walls, and is dotted with enchanting corners to discover, from the Pieve di San Giovanni to the Church of San Lorenzo, which dates back to the 1200s. Historic shops and taverns line the squares and stone-paved streets. The Palazzo Pretorio, the public wine cellar of Val di Cornia, and the historic Rocca di Campiglia, which occupies the highest part of the village, are not to be missed.

From Campiglia Marittima, you will admire the scenery from the Rocca dei conti della Gherardesca and the narrow, cobblestone streets of the village as well as a panoramic view of bays, promontories, and islands: the landscape panorama is reflected in the waters between the Promontory of Argentario and the Gulf of Baratti, offering a breathtaking view of the Tuscan Archipelago and, when the weather is favourable, as far as the northern coasts of Corsica.

In August, for five consecutive days, medieval and game-related events take place that pale in comparison to any other historical and cultural celebration; these events attract visitors from all over the region.

Open the Village is an event dedicated to street theatre, featuring events and performances in the narrow streets and squares. Also known as the Abc Festival, this event combines shows and traditional gastronomy to narrate the story of this charming and picturesque Tuscan village.

In the municipality of Campiglia Marittima, you'll find the ancient thermal spa of Venturina Terme, dating back to the Etruscan-Roman era and known as Caldane, which has retained its captivating and timeless appeal over time. You can also explore the natural beauty of the San Silvestro Archaeological Mining Park, which extends over 450 hectares in the hilly area north of Campiglia. This park is home to the fascinating Rocca San Silvestro, an ancient mining settlement founded in the Middle Ages to exploit copper, lead, and silver resources.

In the Park, you can also visit the Archaeology and Mineral Museum before continuing to the Temperino Mine, a 360-meter long gallery where you can enter wearing a safety helmet to discover the mining extraction techniques from the past to the present day.

Those who wish can follow itinerary number 7 of the Etruscan Trail "From Volterra to Piombino," traversing beautiful cork oak forests, to visit, among other things, some old abandoned quarries that recall the archaeological and mining history of the Campiglia area before ascending towards the hamlets of Prata and Belvedere, from which one can see the entire Suvereto area, with views extending all the way to the Island of Elba.
This route even leads to the Aldobrandesca Fortress of Suvereto, since you are here after admiring the historic medieval center, you will return through the gentle countryside of the Val di Cornia amidst vineyards, blooming flowers, and stunning scenery that with a touch of nostalgia will bring you back to Campiglia Marittima for the conclusion of this incredible tour.
